Managing our Moods

Our moods, like the weather, are changeable, often unpredictable, and affect everyone around us, defining what we can and cannot do.

Moods are like the ocean surface. Sometimes calm, they can be a soothing balm bringing happiness to yourself and others; sometimes stormy, they can be fearful and intimidating. In such cases the foundations of mood are being created by deeper and higher forces, wind, tide and powerful currents and surges, which form the basis for how we instinctively react to ourselves, our circumstances, those around and the world in general. 

Mindfulness, by disconnecting the constant feedback loop by which mood is reinforced, gradually brings a balance and perspective back to your mood. While this effect is often immediate and occurs during each session and increasingly between sessions, the Mindfulness practice also brings pacifying and clarifying energy to the causes and conditions underlying our negative moods.

The very act of bringing the mind back to a self aware centre continually, again and again, reduces the energy needed to power our deeper and lesser known motivations, while simultaneously bringing a consciousness of their reducing impact.

Mood is the general emotional tone you are experiencing, above and beyond the immediate reactions and responses occurring on a moment by moment basis. There are many contributors to mood, but Mindfulness, by minimizing the internal dialogue and critique, has a definite positive impact on general well being.

Emotional extremes can be effectively managed by the levelling and equalizing effects of maintaining sustained self awareness, or awareness on a particular meditation support. In the short term the practice focused the mind on the present moment and does not give so many opportunities to deviate into strong emotion causing thoughts and scenario building. In the longer term, the habits of mind and emotion are gradually shifted and changed to more positive and calmer channels.

Our courses are each of 4 weeks duration. We have 2 courses suitable to beginners and which should be undertaken in sequence, plus another Mindful Living course which helps to ground the program in day to day experience. We would expect all students to identify areas of life and experience which have seen positive impact after the end of the second course. Usually much sooner.
