Mindfulness for Sleep Improvement

Insomnia is a condition we likely all have experienced at one time or another in life. As an occasional and unwelcome nigh-time visitor it results in extreme fatigue and a drastic lowering of mood and performance. 

Some however are cursed with consistent chronic insomnia with a correspondingly higher impact on our quality of life.

The causes of insomnia are not clearly known, and the treatments are limited as a result. Outside of chemical intervention which may sometimes be required, various forms of relaxation therapy have been successful.

The practice of Mindfulness as a treatment for insomnia has a growing body of evidence based research to validate the instinct that routinely and consistently bringing about a state of mental calm will have a positive impact on our ability to drop off to sleep.

In addition to this instinct, the actual practice of mindfulness while seeking sleep, and the acceptance of the state of sleeplessness itself, paradoxically appears to foster the transition into the sleep state.

In addition to the positive effects of general relaxation and on the transition to sleep as a result of reducing the volume and frequency of the inner dialogue, the process of using the experiences of sleeplessness as a support for your mindfulness can assist in bringing sleep itself.

Practicing Mindfulness while under the influence of any types of medication affecting the mind and behaviour is not recommended. In such cases we recommend you refer to your medical health practitioner  for advice before undertaking a course of Mindfulness practice.

Mindfulness is not practiced lying down for the obvious reason that this supports the tendency to go to sleep, or drift in the stages of pre-sleep. However as a support for sleeplessness we would recommend, in addition to formal sitting practice during the day, the adoption of a mindful practice while in bed preparing for sleep.

The quantity, quality and meaning in dreams are highly personal, as is the impact of Mindfulness practice on dreaming. Some report increased volume of dreaming, increased vividness as well as the phenomena of lucid dreaming; awakening inside your dreams. However others report no noticeable change to their dream lives.
