Mindfulness for Behavioural Change

Our behaviours are born from our attitudes, our thoughts and feelings. As the ingrained patterns of our thoughts are interrupted and space is created for our self awareness, we have the capacity to alter our reactive behaviours, as our habitual programmed behaviours are gradually and incrementally revealed, and opened to change.

Habits of thought and action are exactly the material in which Mindfulness is engaged, for these represent the unconscious, distracted element of our minds which will be changed through time. This change can be of many types, from behaviours gradually disappearing as the foundations in emotion and thought change, to adaptation of behaviours in favour of more positive longer term outcomes.

Short term behavioural change is also achieved through specific mindful interventions. As you develop a practice, you will find yourself becoming more conscious on a day to day basis, allowing more opportunity to challenge and change your own negative behaviours and expression.

Behaviour is the outcome of conscious, subconscious and unconscious processes occurring in the mind, brain and nervous system. The degree to which Mindfulness impacts these forces indicates how much change in behaviour can occur. Research shows that all are impacted over time, with resulting changes in behaviour to more positive and developmental modes.

Many studies have now shown that the structure and activity of the brain can be both controlled, and changed permanently, as a result of practicing Mindfulness and Meditation.

Behaviour is a complex subject with numerous interacting forces, and given all people are unique, it is not possible to predict timescales for specific outcomes. Some people report strong short term impacts while others see no change for many months, though the general trend is to experience slow and gradual positive change in direct proportion to the practice commitment.
